Kandy

Kandy held out against European colonizers longer than any other Sri Lankan
city and that independent spirit is still visible in its pace, its culture, and its pride. Set
around a central lake and surrounded by forested hills, Kandy is home to the Temple of the
Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most important sites. The nightly Kandyan cultural
dance performance is not a tourist spectacle it is a genuine artistic tradition that has
survived centuries. Peradeniya Botanical Garden, one ofAsia’s finest, sits just outside the
city. Kandy rewards those who give it more than a few hours.
