Cooler air, tea-covered hills and winding roads make Sri Lanka’s highlands a welcome change of pace. A journey through Nuwara Eliya and Ella is best enjoyed with time to stop, walk and watch the landscape unfold.
Tea country around Nuwara Eliya
Tea estates climb the slopes around Nuwara Eliya. A factory visit can reveal how leaves become the tea served in your cup; ask in advance about visitor hours and access. Nearby, Gregory Lake and Hakgala Botanical Garden offer contrasting ways to spend time outdoors. The higher elevation can feel cool, especially in the evening, so pack a light warm layer.
Onwards to Ella
Ella is a base for views across the Ella Gap, walks and visits to Nine Arch Bridge. Little Adam’s Peak is a popular shorter hike, though paths and steps can be uneven or slippery after rain. Choose footwear with grip, carry water and allow extra time. Keep clear of railway tracks and follow local safety instructions at the bridge.
Consider a train journey
The hill-country railway is known for its green views and relaxed pace. Seats and schedules vary, so check current availability and book ahead where possible. A road transfer offers more flexibility for stops; your route can combine both modes if timing allows.
Travel at your own pace
Allow at least one night in each area if you want more than a passing view. Weather changes quickly in the hills, and roads can be winding, so leave room in the schedule. Tell your guide about mobility needs or motion sickness before choosing walks and transfers.
