When to visit
The southwest coast generally has its sunnier season from December to February, while May to September is often a good time for the east coast and northern dry zone. The hill country is cooler, with relatively dry weather often from January to April. October and November can bring rain across the island. Weather varies, so check the forecast before travel.
Currency and payments
The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Cards are accepted at many hotels and larger businesses, but carry some cash for smaller shops, markets and tips. ATMs are available in towns; check fees and notify your bank of travel if needed.
What to pack
Bring lightweight clothing, sun protection, insect repellent, comfortable shoes, a rain layer and a warmer layer for the hills.
